Hi Dare, another protocol worth mentioning in this context might be Linden Lab's Reverse HTTP [http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Reverse_HTTP]. We're currently working on Yaler [http://www.yaler.net/] an implementation of Reverse HTTP to enable browser-based real time monitoring and direct control of mobile and embedded devices.
