Somewhere along the line it seems like I downloaded one too many internal builds of Internet Explorer 7 and hosed my browser setup. Since I hate mucking around with re-installing, rebooting and registry tweaks I decided to use Firefox as my full time browser instead. Not only have I not missed IE 7, I've fallen in love with certain Firefox extensions like SessionSaver which recovers all open browser tabs and form content in case you have a browser crash. This has proved to be a godsend when I come in during the morning and our IT department has rebooted my machine due to some security patch. All I need to do is fire up Firefox and have all my open tabs from the previous day show up in the browser.

The only problem I've had has been with constantly being prompted to enter my username and password on every Sharepoint page I browse to in our corporate network. I had almost resigned to having to waste my morning trying to fix my hosed IE 7 install until it occured to me to search the Web for a solution. That's how I found out about the network.automatic-ntlm-auth.trusted-uris preference. Once I tweaked this preference, it was all good.
...
Except for the fact that Sharepoint seems to use a bunch of Javascript that only works in Internet Explorer so I'm still going to have to muck with my Internet Explorer install anyway.

*sigh*

At least I can browse different pages without that prompt showing up all the time.  I hope this information is useful to some other poor soul who's trying to use Firefox on an intranet that requires NTLM authentication.

You can use the IE Tab extension for FireFox, which allows you to open a page in IE, inside FF. I use this to access our Team System portals, and it works just fine... only thing I have not figured out is how to specify that a bookmark should always be opened in an IE tab.

I normally leave windows, programs etc open over night as well, and am annoyed as well when I come in the morning, just to see Windows booted to apply a patch (which of course is good in itself!). I believe Vista will have a new restart manager, that gives programs a chance to save their state before such a forced reboot takes place and then restore themself after the boot, so that users don't even notice something happend. I heard Office 2007 will support it, don't know about IE though. Would be nice if that worked out as promised.

+1 for IE Tab. Works great.

I use Maxthon that has much more options than Opera, IE and Firefox togheter...
You have the recovery of all the tabs without any extension and a lot of other things...

David, yes IE supports restart manager in Vista. Dare: why are you not dogfooding Vista? :-) Lorenzo; Maxthon is a great option too

When do you start at Google again or have you not told anyone yet?

Dare, if an IE setup "hosed your machine" you should let me send my setup dev team and test team on over to examine your machine and figure out what went wrong.

Note that this isn't special treatment just for you - we asked all internal self hosters to send mail to the IE setup team if they encountered issues, and we'd respond quickly and if necessary hand-hold their machine back to working order.

Shoot me an email via corpnet mail and we'll arrange to debug on your machine and get it back to working order.

OK?

Dare,

I recently installed IE7 beta 2 and it looks good. I found a problem with it and RSS Bandit, though...The offline icon appears in the RSS Bandit status bar and subsequently, you cannot update feeds. Anyway, I thought you'd like to know. Of course I uninstalled IE7 because I need my RSS Bandit!

Bruce,
I've already gone to Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled but not rebooted yet. If my machine would still be interesting to look at in this state then I can wait on rebooting my machine.

Speaking of which, something like SessionSaver would great in RSSBandit -- more than once I've had a bunch of tabs open in RSS Bandit and I have to restart or something goes wrong with RSS Bandit and I lose all my tabs. I guess I should go file a feature request...

Regarding IEtab, you can set it up so that some pages always render using the IE engine. I have added my sharepoint sites to the list and whenever I go there, the IE rendering engine is used automatically. The only problem I have not been able to solve is the fact that the backspace key always brings me back to the last page that was rendered by the Gecko engine instead of moving to the previous page.

Firefox also supports SPNEGO/Kerberos, i.e., Negotiate authentiacation, with these configuration attributes:

network.negotiate-auth.allow-proxies
network.negotiate-auth.delegation-uris

Thanks for helping morale on the IE team with your asinine commentary.
