MSN Messenger
. The maximum size of a buddy list has been increased from 150 to 300. Enjoy.

Isn't that still pretty damn arbitrary?
I've got some MSN messenger feature requests:
1) document the protocol.
2) allow third party servers with zero affiliation to MS. This means no licence agreements. Full interop should be possible.
3) make a legally binding promise to allow third party clients. Promissory estoppel etc etc.
Seriously, isn't IM just a horrific train wreck at the moment?
We need a big player to just come out and admit that the current situation is a horror, and face the fact that commoditization and decentralization is needed for IM to grow up into a real core internet service.
I am sick of this fragmented space. MS has the cash, and I hope the cojones, to kill this market in order to save it.

MSN Messenger has around 150 million users. Decisions we make on how much data we store on our servers and how much traffic the network can withstand is anything but arbitrary.

If you have a compelling business case for why MSN should take any of the actions you list, I'll be sure to forward them to our business dev folks at work.

"Seriously, isn't IM just a horrific train wreck at the moment?"
No. Just use MSN Messenger. Do you really NEED more than 300 contacts on five different services? Perhaps email would be the right tool for you. Maybe you could offer to pay for it so it could be improved and developed like a product.

Seriously, the next feature MSN Messenger needs is async messaging to offline users. Yahoo has had this for years!!
Hope things are going well at the new dig!

"if you need more than 300 folks use email" pfffft.
all I can say is...what would have happened if folks had said something like
"If you need such low latency on your communications, drop email and pick up the phone"
I am happy we have more than 200 contacts.
