I intended that we'd have newsgroup support in the last version of RSS Bandit but eventually we had to pull it out so we could get the release out earlier. I can definitely promise that you will be able to subscribe to whatever newsgroups tickle your fancy in the Nightcrawler release of your favorite RSS reader.

I've checked in support to finally enable this functionality into CVS. There are still some bugs to work out such as dealing with various funky headers and binary attachments as well as design questions such as whether to merge the UI for subscribing to feeds and newsgroups or keep them separate.

Below is a screenshot showing the microsoft.public.xml newsgroup (note that the dates might be wrong)

But will it decode binary files? If people can't get pr0n, it will fail. :-)

This is good news.

On a different note, do you have plans to have Group By Date just like in Outlook? I think it is an important feature that would make the organization of the items a lot fancier.

Perhaps a separate top level node called My Newsgroups is in order. And newsgroup folders might have a different folder icon to distinguish them.

Great work, Dare. It'll be nice to drop Outlook Express. I'll reserve feature requests until I do my due dilligence and actually download and use it for awhile. Thanks again, you make my life easier.

I too will be glad to drop Outlook Express. I also like the integration of Newsgroups and RSS feeds, so I would vote against a top-level "My Newsgroups" folder (let somebody create that on their own if they want).

Now if only we could get the integration on the protocol side of things...somebody needs to merge ATOM and NNTP.
